There are thousands of books on happiness and trying to achieve happiness. Most of the self help section at your local library, Amazon, or Barnes & Noble is on happiness. So in this article I’m going to tell you why you aren’t happy right now and how to be happy.
Are You Happy Right Now?
This question is a weird question because when you ask yourself are you happy right now, that doesn’t mean whenever you achieved something or get something you always wanted. If you just got married, had a baby, got a new dog, got a new car, promotion, or new house, then of course you are going to say: “YES I’m happy”.
The question is are you happy right now after the rush and trill of those things have wore off? Years after you got married and moved into your new house and months after you got a new car, do you still feel happy? Often times the answer will either be no or sorta.
The Package Delivery Addiction
The simplest way to breakdown the point I’m trying to make is by talking about ordering something online and getting it delivered to your house. Have you ever ordered something you wanted online before? If you have then you know the excited feeling you have when you are anxiously waiting for your package to arrive. Everyday you check the shipping tracker hoping it will come on time or earlier.
The crazy part about ordering things online is the more expensive your order is, the more excited you are going to be to get your package.
What Happens When Your Package Finally Arrives?
Your excitement is at its peak while opening up your package and once it’s fully open, your happiness and excitement starts to decline. You go from being extremely excited to slowly back down to where you were before you placed the order.
So to get that same feeling of excitement and joy again, that night you go online to shop again and you place another order. The sad part about it all is that some people live such boring and sad lives that the only thing they look forward to is their online orders coming in the mail.
The Vicious Cycle Of Artificial Happiness
Online shopping is a vicious cycle of chasing your tail of happiness. The kicker is you are never truly happy. You just keep pushing off your happiness for one day. “When I get this package I’ll be happy” and once you get it and to your surprise you aren’t happy.
Personal Example:
I went on 2 vacations in the last 3 months. On the last day of the first vacation, I was excited to go back home because I was starting a new position at my company, so I had something new to look forward to. Once I was working in that position for 2 weeks I got comfortable and the excitement wore off.
Once the excitement wore off I decided I’ll buy my first puppy and the anticipation of picking up this puppy and getting her bed and cage ready kept me excited and joyful. After 3 weeks of having this 8 week old puppy, I went another vacation for a week. But this time was different.
On the final day of the vacation I was sad and felt like I was missing a piece of me. Through reflection I figured out the reason why I was sad was because I don’t have anything else to look forward to. I went on 2 vacations, got a new job, and got a new puppy. On the flight back home, I came up with this term called The Grass Is Always Greener Syndrome.
The Grass Is Always Greener Syndrome
This is why people are never happy..
People are never happy because we are suffering from the grass is always greener syndrome. We always think that something new or better will make us happy but it doesn’t. You think once I get a new lover or new job I will be happy. But the kicker is you will be as sad as you are right now with that new job or lover. If you can’t be happy with where you are right now with what you got then you won’t be happy with a million dollar mansion on the beach.
I’m not saying that you can’t thrive and work to become better, get a better job, and make a better life for yourself but you must be grateful for where you are right now. Otherwise you will never be happy because you will always put your happiness on a deferred payment plan, waiting for that one day where you will be happy. I promise you will be waiting on that day forever.
